So today was the day… my first “competitive” race, the Beverley Lions Club New Year 10km. It was freezing cold at Market Cross (literally -2!) though it didn’t take too long to get warmed up. Around halfway through I was running a reasonable time but flagging a bit - one of the old boys from the athletics club got alongside me and helped pace me round. But before I get to the final time a lesson in humility!

As I ran down the finishing straight on market cross, as asphalt became cobbles I slipped over! The only thing which was really hurt was my pride, though my little finger and knees are a tad sore and my running gloves are wrecked! I’m also generally quite tired but that’s probably got as much to do with staying up to see in the New Year!

My final time was 54 minutes which I really happy with (under the one hour that I hoped to achieve!). Now I’m really starting to think about the Bath Half Marathon in March.

You’ll notice sponsorship link on the right of the page and a donate link in the menu at the top. I’ve set a target of £400 to raise for Shelter a charity who I’ve supported for a number of years and whom have done incredible work making sure that children have safe housing in which to grow up in. Please give generously!

….and so is the 10km Lions race!!! (See the route at realbuzz.com) I’m now into rave race preparation mode - laying the kit out, checking trainers, thinking about what I’m eating and making sure that I have my money for the entry form! It’s incredible how nervous I feel about the whole thing - especially as I ran 10km last week on my own and didn’t feel too bad afterwards. I keep reminding myself that the only aim for the event is to finish and to keep running/jogging throughout the whole thing!

I’m just thinking about kit and stuff at the moment. Whether to go ready to run, or take some rubbish kit and a bag dumping the kit not caring too much if I get it back at the end of the race! The later seems attractive because I stay reasonably warm until the race, though I do need to find some clothes I happy to say goodbye to!

Anyhoo, look at me gabbing on like an old lady - the nerves are really starting to show! I’ll let you know how I go :) Blessings…

With the Beverley Lion’s 10km coming up next Thursday I thought I’d better put in a bit more distance today to check that I’ll get around without too may problems. I made an out and back route aiming to run relaxed out 5km and put in a bit more effort on the returning 5km. The first split was 37 minutes, the returning split was 27 giving me a total of an hour and four minutes - four minutes off the hour that I hope to achieve next week :) If you are in Loughborough and fancy the route - http://www.realbuzz.com/mapyourpassion/?item=257823.

So a new year coming up and a new resolution needed - for this site at least it’ll be making sure to keep the updates up to date! I’m also aiming to keep to my healthy eating plan though this is getting easier as I am now enjoying haddock a few times a week, and good portions of sweetcorn, carrots, mushrooms, onions and peppers (even if the last three have to be chopped into tiny bits!!). Anyhoo, busy rest of the day ahead - catch you soon, God bless…

Happy Christmas to all readers of the run[fatterboy]run blog and a warning that in 7 days the site and myself will be going into overdrive to get the fundraising started for the Bath Half, making money for the charity Shelter. There’s all sorts of stuff going on in the background, but mini-movie, new pages, special features and more are going to be appearing on the site over the next week ready for a cracking 2009!!

It’s also only seven days to my first real event - the Beverley Lion’s New Year day 10km. I went out training today doing a quick 6km loop around Loughborough just to keep me ticking over now I’m starting to find my feet again. The hope is to do a 10km tomo, rest Saturday, and get another good run in Sunday before travelling back to Beverley. I’m also now on proper schedule for my half marathon training which is exciting thanks to realbuzz.com whom I’m now subscribed to for the next year.

So lots going on and coming up - all in all a very exciting time, keep in touch, leave a comment (or two!) and a very Happy Christmas to you whatever you’re doing…

Well the battery on my scales has given up :( so you might have to wait a few days for the sugar meeter to be back on the site, but the good news is that the trend is weight going down!

I got a really grand run in yesterday - set off to do a 5km and felt so good 4km round that I went for the hill and extended it into a 7km run! I’m now looking into preparing and getting ready for the half marathon in March and I’m hoping to run a 10km on New Years day here in Beverley, a 12-miler race in Hemel Hempstead towards the end of January and a yet to be announced 10km at some point in February.

So lots of excitement, and now I really should be getting on with some work - best go!

So with a day off yesterday from work (don’t worry I was still running) I decided to pop into town and find myself something to run in which might help in the dark early morning battle with traffic! I managed to pick up a nike long sleeved high vis top for under £20 and went out this morning in it. I didn’t however manage to find the digital watch I was looking for - a simple one (!) - so that will have to wait until I’m on a day out in Hull/York/Sheffield or get mum and dad to bring me one up from Loughborough!

Today’s run was really good :) I did a 10km over the Westwood to Walkington and back - probably the longest distance I’ve taken on in a while. I managed to do it in just over the hour, which I was pretty happy with seeing as I was running against wind, rain and leaves on what was a particularly grotty morning!

Anyhoo, need to have something to eat and then it’s time to get some work done! Blessings…

Today with the ankle finally feeling better I did my first set of new training - a 5km Fartlek run. For the uninitiated among you Fartlek is…

The word Fartlek is a Swedish word, which means, ‘speed play’. It was first used on the pine needle paths of the Swedish forests by Gosta Holmer, coach to world record holders Gunder Haag and Arne Anderson. Fartlek training means you run as you please and play around with the speed element of the training session. - from Shelter

http://england.shelter.org.uk/what_you_can_do/running/training_resources

I split the run into five sections with a run, sprint and then recovery jog in each. The sprints actually felt very good today - especially sprinting up the paddock hill, though it was very tiring! So I’m also getting back onto the good diet, last few days haven’t been as bad as the cake filled oneBIGweekend!

Anyhoo, I’m going out to buy a watch so that I can do some interval training and a reflective top so that I can do some running early morning and in the evening! Blessings…
